In this talk, Erin Pobjie will discuss, advise and answer your questions about her recent experience as an early career researcher in UK academia and the processes, procedures and pitfalls involved in applying for your first academic position.

About the speaker

Dr Erin Pobjie is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Law at the University of Essex, and a Senior Research Affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.

Dr Pobjie researches in the field of public international law, with a focus on the use of force by States and new and emerging threats to international peace and security, including space security. Her forthcoming monograph is Prohibited Force: The Meaning of Force under International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2023). She is a member of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Use of Force: Military Assistance on Request, a Co-Convener of the Interest Group on Peace and Security of the European Society of International Law, and serves on the Academic Advisory Board of the Zeitschrift für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht (ZaöRV) / Heidelberg Journal of International Law (HJIL).

Prior to joining the University of Essex in 2021, Dr Pobjie was a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and a Research Fellow at the Institute for International Peace and Security Law of the University of Cologne, where she completed her PhD summa cum laude under the supervision of Professor Claus Kreß. She was a visiting scholar at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge, and appointed as a visiting professional at the International Criminal Court’s Victims Participation and Reparations Section. She has been invited to present her research to the International Criminal Court, the German Federal Foreign Office and the Italian Ministry of Defence. Dr Pobjie is admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia. She speaks English, German and Spanish.
